San Francisco is an extremely popular international tourist destination with numerous famous landmarks and attractions. Some examples are the Financial District, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, the Cable Car Museum with cable cars running in and out, Chinatown with a shopper’s paradise, the shopping and hotel district of Union Square, business tycoon homes of Nob Hill, Dungeness crabs and other delicacies of Fisherman’s Wharf, the crooked Lombard Street in Russian Hill, the Little Italy of North Beach, the Coit Tower of Telegraph Hill, the Golden Gate National Recreational Area, Sutro Tower, a good sized red and additionally white radio and television transmission systemon top of the 925 feet (282 m) high Mount Davidson, etc.
San Francisco‘s Recreation and Parks Department maintains more than 200 parks within the city. The largest and most famous of these parks is Golden Gate Park. It was covered by native grasses and sand dunes until the 1860′s, when a herculean effort was made to plant thousands of non-native trees and plants. Numerous attractions were then added to Golden Gate Park Three examples of the attractions are the Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden, and San Francisco Botanical Garden.
A handful of San Francisco‘s parks and almost all of her beaches form part of the regional Golden Gate National Recreation Area. As one of the most popular park areas of the National Park system, the Golden Gate National Recreational Area is visited by over 13 million visitors a year.
